Petroleum Geology Course for non-technical staff

The petroleum upstream, midstream and downstream sectors constitute a large chain of geoscientific and engineering processes. Professionals at all levels of operation continuously make decisions based on geoscientific criteria. Their decisions have great impact on timing, budget, success and profit of running operations. For this reason, they wish to maximise gain and minimise risk in all parts of the chain.

This 3-day petroleum geology course is meant for professionals in the petroleum industry without a geoscientific background. In the course, relevant questions will be treated:
  • What are the major subsurface targets and goals that E&P geoscientists are after?
  • Which methods do they use to find their targets and achieve their goals?
  • How can different methods complement and enhance each other?
  • Which inherent and practical uncertainties are present in E&P methods?
  • How can uncertainties be quantified and used to maximise information and minimise risk?
  • How do technicians and decision makers perceive opportunity and risk at their level?
  • Where do technicians and decision makers meet each other and how do they communicate?
  • What are the major challenges for decision makers in getting all pieces in place?

Graduates from this course will have a fundamental understanding of basic geoscientific methods, their limitations and uncertainties and who uses these methods for decision making.

Day 1

  • Principles and methods in E&P
  • Introduction, basics, perception of numbers

  • Basics of petrophysics
  • Basics of seismic acquisition and processing
  • Basics of seismic interpretation
  • Basics of seismic inversion
  • Basics of wireline log-analysis
  • Reservoir model building

Day 2

  • Geoscientists, their roles in E&P and their issues
  • Role of the petroleum geologist
  • Role of the seismic field crew
  • Role of the seismic processor
  • Role of the seicmic interpretator
  • Role of the petrophysicist / log analysist
  • Role of the reservoir engineer
  • Role of the project leader and exploration/subsurface manager
  • Major issues of each category of technician and manager at their level

Day 3

  • Risk, opportunity and decision making in E&P
  • Uncertainties in geoscientific methods
  • Prospect definition and resource estimation
  • Basics of petroleum economics
  • Risk assessment and risk minimisation
  • Risk versus opportunity
  • Communication and hierarchy between geoscientist roles
  • Petroleum development decisions
  • Conclusions and reconciliation
